I did my guest stint in 2-2 yesterday, which went all right, and 2-1 today. Today's class really got going on the self-intro Q&A section. Essentially, I said a few simple things about myself, then called on a few students to have them ask me questions. (Note: Students are all speaking Japanese.)

Me: <points to student in front row>

Student 1: What do you like to cook most?

Me: Potatoes. Gee, that was easy. <points to student in back corner>

Student 2: <stunned> I thought I was in the don't-call-on-me zone. Um...when you make curry, do you put potatoes in it?

Me: Yes. This Q&A thing is a cinch. ...I wonder if she's the one who was drooling over my curry bread the other day... Also tofu.

Student 2: <extremely confused> You put curry in your tofu?

Teacher: Of course not, don't be silly!

Me: I'm vegetarian, so I don't eat meat.

Class: Oooh.

Me: I don't eat beef, pork, chicken, fish, shrimp, or any other animal.

Class: <gasps in shock>

One student to another: Is that even *possible*?!

Teacher: She's standing right here...

That sounds kind of good, actually...

Oh, Japan, how I love you. But DAMN, get out of the Dark Ages already. I mean, I was younger than that kid when I made the decision to stop eating meat. Yeesh.

I'm relieved to hear you're vegetarian and getting by fine in Japan. During my past visits I haven't found a great deal to eat apart from tofu and rice and breads and stuff...

The secret is cooking everything myself. ^_^; If I couldn't cook, I would starve.

Oh, they're so cute!

I just got back from the Central States Conference on the Teaching of Foreign Language. I took a day and a half of workshops on TPRS, which, by the way, no longer means Total Physical Response Storytelling. Now it means Teaching Proficiency through Reading and Storytelling.

It sounds as if these students who gasped in amazement would love the technique. In this method, while you are telling the story, the students must show they are following along by gasping, "Oh, no!", etc. at all the appropriate parts (in addition to making the action signs). It's actually a lot of fun, even if it sounds hokey.

How cool, your class. Too bad some of it couldn't be in English.
