I heard back from my supervisor this week that I am officially enrolled in the March beagle replacement class (yay!). That means--barring any unforeseen delays (like the blizzard that hit Georgia the year that I went to get Benny)--Benny will be retiring the first week of March.

Saturday I went downtown to buy a new pair of more athletic shoes that I can use for taking Rei on walks. When I came home, I took him for a long walk along the Bay Trail down to the local dog park. He seemed to enjoy it quite a bit. He's mostly over his fear of cars, though he does still shy away if a loud one drives past.

In the evening, I started working on sewing Benny's Halloween costume. I picked up a pattern during a visit to JoAnn Fabric, and I sewed most of it while watching TV before bed. I put the completed fabric pieces away in the game room, then went to sleep.

I woke up Sunday morning to find that Rei had been a naughty boy. He had pulled my sewing supplies off the coffee table and chewed them to bits, including a spool of thread, the plastic handles of my good scissors, the last pattern piece that I hadn't finished sewing yet, and a pincushion. Then he went potty in the middle of the kitchen floor. ~_~ On the bright side, I guess his shenanigans wore him out, because he slept most of the day on Sunday and didn't get into any more trouble. Also, he didn't touch my brand new shoes (which were on the floor right next to the coffee table), so that was a relief.

It looks like he mostly just ripped it into short pieces and left it in a bird's nest on the floor.

Phew! Bird's nest isn't so bad as the thought of that thread going inside him....

I don't want to tempt him with things to chew on that resemble blankets or socks or pillows or whatever.

With Ebony we gave her those cardboard drink carriers [like you get when you get more than one drink wherever] when she was a puppy. She could rip it to shreds and that was okay. The *most* luck we've had so far with toys [because even as an adult she loves to tear up her toys] has been with an orange-coated tennis ball we got from the in-laws as a puppy-gift, the one Kong toy we've managed to come across....and the rope toy that's actually a bit too big for her. Unlike the others, she's not managed to chew that one up yet. XD

Although she's still chewed a few holes in blankets, although I think that comes from grooming on the bed...I keep the blankets off, she doesn't chew up the sheets, so I'm thinking the blankets are strictly accidental. *shrugs*

And yes, Rei is probably waiting for you to go to bed to go after your stuff....you aren't there to say no!

I'll have to try a rope toy and see how he likes it.

The neighbor dog likes to chew up the fabric plant pots that I have out in the yard. They start ripping after a couple years of exposure to the elements anyway. Rei hasn't shown any interest in those that I've seen, though.

Rope toys are good for a game of tug-o-war. Or general chewing and shaking it around in order to make it "dead", at least that's what Ebony's done a time or two. She seems to like movement [similar to dangling a string or whatnot in front of a cat], so maybe that's why Rei hasn't shown interest in the planters? Not moving around enough. XD
