Since I can't spend all of my time dwelling on the disaster at work, I invited my neighbors and their friends to come over for dinner and games next Friday to celebrate my birthday. I spent most of Thursday morning getting some of my backlog of dishes cleaned and put away, then worked in the yard for a while in the afternoon.

On Friday, I spent the morning running a bunch of errands. I'm hoping to put together a Mexican meal, so I stopped at the nearby Mexican grocery store to pick up the necessary ingredients for making tamales and various other things. I also have several artichokes ready to be picked in the front yard, so I'll probably make something with those.

wow, it's really been a while. happy birthday!

thanks all your help, my blueberry and raspberry plants are growing better this year. I still play Dominion and in fact teach friends who come over. =P

I'm returning to Japan for medical conference in June and started contacting people I knew in Japan. I came across an entry from a blog written by a guy in JET for 3 years. It kind of reminded me of what you wrote of your experience teaching in Japan. It was very insightful. Here it is in case you are interested. http://thisjapaneselife.org/2013/11/06/expat-friendships/
