07:39 pm: Winter medley
There has not been much to report here recently, other than that it has been raining a lot. The weather contributes to my habit of staying indoors and playing on the computer for hours.

The one bit of excitement is that my toaster oven broke several weeks ago (the heat lamp on the top burnt out) after over five years of use. I had a smaller one from my college days that I tried using as backup, but the power switch only worked some of the time, and I'd often end up having to make my toast in a frying pan. Considering how easily distracted I am, that was not the best option. I decided to treat myself to a new deluxe toaster oven with digital programming and convection fan. It arrived on Friday, and I'm enjoying it so far. Since I use my toaster oven nearly every day, it seemed like a good investment.

Yesterday I went to a new game meetup hosted at someone's house in downtown San Mateo. Only a small group attended, and they were mostly all fans of the same types of games I have in my collection. I took over my new copy of Temporum (the latest game by the designer of Dominion) and someone else brought Five Tribes (another recent hot title), and we all played those. It was a lot of fun, and the best part is that it was only about a 20 minute walk from my house, so I didn't have to worry about catching any buses.

Today I spent all morning...er...day playing Warcraft, trying to level up my battle pets. Pet battles were introduced to the game a long time ago, but I never pursued them beyond the early stages, so today I was trying to make up for lost time. It's kind of interesting to see all the different pet types, but it's very time consuming.

Other than that, I had to use up a bunch of CSA vegetables before they went bad, so I tried a new style of making a casserole. I took some zucchini and potatoes and grated them, then added some sliced leek and celery, and blended it with shredded cheese and breadcrumbs with salt for seasoning. I didn't bother layering anything, I just mixed everything together in a big bowl and spooned it into the casserole dishes, with a little extra parmesan sprinkled on top, then baked it until it got all brown and crunchy around the edges. It turned out pretty good.

Whoa, that new game group sounds like an awesome match for you. I hope they meet frequently.

Do leveled-up pets matter more with the latest expansion?

Do leveled-up pets matter more with the latest expansion?

The new expansion introduced something called a Garrison. It is essentially a small town that each player can design with certain buildings from a selection of different sizes and functions. Some buildings come automatically, some you have to unlock by doing quests.

One of the buildings unlocked by a quest is the "menagerie," which is dedicated to pet battles. Previously in the game, if you didn't engage in pet battles, it had no effect on other areas of the game. Now, though, this building is sitting there in the Garrison with a big lock on it, and it can't be used until the player does the quest of winning some pet battles with pets at level 25.

Technically, I lose nothing by ignoring it. But if I ever want my Garrison to be complete, I have to do the quest. As of last week, my highest level battle pet was 8. After spending far too many hours on pet battles, I now have three pets at level 20. Still not maxed out, but getting closer.

Note that the pets are all different types, each with different strengths and weaknesses and abilities. There is no guarantee that the three pets I'm working on leveling will be successful at the quest. I may have to level different ones later. It's kind of absurd. But there you go.
