04:36 am: 2014 Kickstarter Game Update Week 10
Game I Backed:

Tuscany: Expand the World of Viticulture
Status: Funded

This is an expansion that upgrades last summer's big hit worker placement game Viticulture, about making and selling wine, mostly famous because the project creator figured out how to work together with Amazon to get cheap shipping all over the world. (Ever after, international backers on pretty much every single campaign have been posting links to his blog in an attempt to make postage cheaper. It never works, but they keep trying...) I wasn't too interested in the original game, but this expansion adds so much (and fixes a number of issues with the base game) that I figured it was worth a try. The twist in this game is that every player gets a worker that can be played on blocked spaces, mitigating the frustration of someone else taking a spot first.

Games I Viewed:
The Nile Ran Red
Status: 66% funded

This is a set of three small card games with an Egyptian theme. I think the art is fantastic, and I was tempted to back it just for that. However, I restrained myself because I have a hard time envisioning actually playing them.

Apex: Theropod Deck-Building Game
Status: Funded

This is a deck builder with the theme of dinosaurs hunting prey and striving to grow and evolve. It is designed so that it can be played solo, a feature that I found attractive. I already have Star Realms, though, which is much more compact.

Epic Resort
Status: 82% funded

This is a combination deck building/worker placement game in which players are running tropical resorts and hoping to attract tourists and tired heroes to relax. However, monsters have followed the wounded heroes back from battle and are happy to eat some nice tasty tourists, if the heroes haven't rested enough to fight them off. I think the theme is incredibly clever, but my main problem with the game is that it has such an enormous table footprint. Piles of cards for purchase and player tableau cards are spread out everywhere. It's already fiddly enough dealing with Dominion's ten kingdoms; this is Dominion plus Ascension plus Race for the Galaxy.

You know I love that, but -- I only skimmed the page description -- it sounds like this isn't a freebie but requires you to "train" the worker?

No, that's from an expansion. What I'm talking about is the "Grande" worker. Every player gets one at the start of the game. (This is a slight change to the first edition rules of the base game that's new in this updated version.)

Also, the rumor is that the designer is working on revealing solo rules for the game.
