07:31 pm: ...It pours...
When I went to work on Monday last week, I discovered that Benny had been attacked by another dog at the kennel over the weekend and had suffered several gashes across his nose. The kennel workers had apparently seen the blood in the kennel, but didn't find the injury, so they didn't think he was hurt. (I guess I get a lot more up close and personal with him than they do.)

I took him to the vet right away to make sure he was all right, and he got some antibiotics so that he wouldn't have to worry about it getting infected. The damage looked painful, but he acted the same as always, and he wasn't licking it or anything that would suggest that it bothered him. The vet said it would no doubt heal fine.

Other than that, I didn't accomplish much to speak of the rest of the week, because it was overcast and rainy for days. On Sunday, when I was doing my laundry, I thought it was odd that my clothes were taking more than double the usual amount of time to dry. At first I imagined the damp weather might have something to do with it, but when they were still tumbling after nearly three hours, I opened the dryer to check. They were all still cold and wet; it seems the heating element in my dryer had broken. I couldn't hang my clothes outside in the rain, so I wound up hanging them in front of the furnace for the rest of the afternoon. At least the washer still works.

Today, when I was taking Benny out for a quick potty break before working a couple flights, I stepped off the curb wrong and twisted my ankle, winding up slamming my knee and hand down on the pavement. (Benny thought this was the best thing ever, since half my treats fell out of my pouch all over the ground.) It wasn't so bad that I couldn't walk, but now my ankle is tender and slightly swollen, my knee is purple, and the heel of my hand is sore and turning a veritable rainbow of colors. I held some cold packs on my hand once I got back to the canine office, since that was the most injured location, but I can tell it's going to be painful for a while.

Poor Benny! Poor Dryer! Poor s_vamp!

They saw blood, yet didn't persist in their exam until they found the injury ON HIS FACE? Way to exercise due diligence, guys. Do these kinds of attacks happen regularly in the kennel? I mean, was this some strange vicious dog in with Benny or a regular kennelmate?

Benny thought this was the best thing ever, since half my treats fell out of my pouch all over the ground.

Oh, dear. We do not want to train Benny to push you off curbs. But poor little hurt nose deserved some treats.

I wish I had recommendations about what to do re your ankle, knee and hand, but I am hopelessly ignorant about these things. I'm guessing you're not planning to take off from work to give the ankle a rest, so...maybe you should wrap it to give it extra support while you and Benny are on your feet?

That kind of stumped me, too, but it is pretty subtle to notice unless you're crouched down next to him in kissing range.

Do these kinds of attacks happen regularly in the kennel?

It has happened before to another beagle (now retired), but that time it was the beagle's fault. The handler was walking the beagle down the hall of kennels, and the beagle lunged at another dog through the fence.

I suspect a similar thing happened, except this time Benny was standing at the front of his kennel watching another dog walk by, and the other dog attacked him through the fence.

That doesn't explain why no one realized the attack had happened until they found the blood. You'd think the person walking the dog would have noticed when it occurred. The only thing I can figure is that it was another dog that escaped from its kennel and was wandering the halls without a leash (which happens sometimes).

maybe you should wrap it to give it extra support while you and Benny are on your feet?

I'm definitely not up for running at Benny's usual speed.

Post of sadness! I hope Benny's and your injuries heal quickly.

Benny thought this was the best thing ever, since half my treats fell out of my pouch all over the ground.

I have to admit, this made me laugh, though. Bad Benny! Put your partner above getting more treats!

Not a chance. He's such a mercenary.

Aw, what a perfectly awful week! I hope all the injuries heal quickly - yours and Benny's.

My knee turned an exciting rainbow of colors for a couple of weeks after I fell on it in Japan - before you guys arrived - but a swollen ankle sounds potentially serious, please see the doctor if it doesn't heal quickly on its own!

I have been glad to hear that you have been getting more rain in California, though it must be a nuisance to have to live with. Hope the dryer turns out to be a quick fix.

I put some ice on my ankle for a while, and though it has turned a rather striking violet, I am able to get around on it well enough as long as I don't bend it much. I'm going to try to rest it as much as I can on my one weekend day.

*hugs* That sounds painful, indeed. I'm glad you and Benny will be all right, but I'm sorry you're going to be uncomfortable for so long. Be careful of that ankle; it'll take ages to heal and probably won't ever be entirely the same.

I guess all the bits and pieces start to wear out eventually. It does make me glad that my house is all a single story, so I don't have to worry about taking stairs every day.
