03:43 pm: I do occasionally learn new tricks
I will be honest, I peeked at several LJ pages before, and I was not very impressed. Whereas personal home pages express a great deal of individuality and character, it seemed as though LJ pages reduced people to cookie-cutter lookalikes who tried to make up for the pages' lack of creativity by sticking in as many flashy icons as possible. I also found them annoying to navigate. Therefore, to save myself the headache, I avoided reading LJ pages.

However, after being told repeatedly that I should get on LJ because that's where everyone else is, I decided I should at least give it a fair chance before making up my mind completely. If the benefits turn out to be as good as everyone claims, it may be a useful medium for posting updates on my travels.

I will be heading to Moriyama, Japan, this summer as part of the LISD Teacher Exchange program. The contract is for one year, with the possibility to renew for a second year if all goes well. I have previously taught in Japan for two years as an ALT with the JET Program, and I studied for the 2003-04 academic year at the Japan Center for Michigan Universities in order to become certified as a Japanese teacher. I am hoping that I will be able to use this journal to post updates throughout the year describing the things I encounter as part of this exchange program, both for my friends to keep up with what I'm doing and potentially for the LISD to have a current resource about the way the job is going. The problem is, I tend to procrastinate when it comes to updating on a regular basis. ^_^; Maybe with such a public medium I'll be better about it...

LJ has far less to do with expressing individuality and character than it has to do with keeping up with people's goings-on. ;)

Hi! I don't know if you remember me, but you did some Japanese translation for a story I wrote a few years ago, "Phoenix Burning." Just wanted to say thanks again for that -- it was a great help!

Ooh, the Buffy story?

I had intended to email and tell you what an absolutely stunningly wonderful story that was. It really blew me away. Unfortunately, just after I had finished reading it, my laptop died.

What [Unknown LJ tag] said! I, for one, will read your updates with great interest.

Welcome to LJ.

Hi! I'm Abby. We actually haven't passed by in fandom for a while because I ran away from everyone for a while there, then LJ sucked me back in.

Hey, there!

It's a journal. Not a personal web site. You're supposed to make your words creative as opposed to the appearance of the site itself. *g*

Nice to see ya, though.

See...if the appearance doesn't matter, why go through all the trouble of making it a web page? If only the words are important, why not just use email? To me, that's like putting a radio show on television. If you're going to make it such a visual medium, might as well take full advantage of it.

That's what the annoying icons/avatars do. It's a radio-to-TV upgrade.

But I didn't create this web site. I just record events of my life. People don't want to read My Life in Narrative in email. :P This way they can read what they want and ignore what they want, and I still have the satisfaction of venting or babbling or memeing or whatever.
