06:59 am: Playing paper cup
This week I have been busy running around buying the things I will need for my kitchen renovation. I have finally purchased all the countertops, the sink and faucet, the tile for the backsplash, the flooring, and the dishwasher. I'm putting off buying a new refrigerator until I absolutely have to.

Over the weekend, my parents and I have been spending our time clearing things out of the kitchen, making room in the back yard for the trash that will be generated by the demolition, and cooking up big batches of food to store in the freezer in the garage so that we will have some instant meals in the coming weeks. The project begins tomorrow morning, so today is our last chance to use the oven. I've already stockpiled paper plates and cups, so we can minimize the use of anything that would need to be washed.

During down time, we've been playing a new game I bought, Arctic Scavengers. It's the first "deckbuilding" card game I've tried, and I like it a lot (though we play without the anti-opponent sniper and saboteur cards). We also played Police Precinct, a cooperative game in which the players are cops dealing with emergencies and street crime while solving a murder. (We lost. But we'll try a rematch!)

My brother is going to be flying over from Michigan for a brief visit next weekend, so I'm looking forward to that. It's a shame that he'll get here right when my kitchen is all torn apart...but it's a good excuse to go out to eat at a restaurant!

I'm completely ruined by co-op games, because I read the premise for Arctic Scavengers and now I'm sad the tribes are competing instead of cooperating.

Did your parents plan their visit so they would be able to sit the house while the renovation is going on? That's really kind of them, even though it ramps up the planning required to get three people fed with no kitchen access. I hadn't really thought about the awkwardness of having people trooping in and out of your home when you're not there. (Reason #372 I can never own a home.)

Is your brother coming on business or was this just his first chance to come out?

There are cooperative deck building games, such as Shadowrift and Legendary: A Marvel Deck Building Game, but the themes of those didn't appeal to me as much. I do have a couple low on my wishlist (Mythic Mages and Runicards), but neither one has actually been released yet, so there's not much info about them.

They didn't actually plan for house-sitting as much as for helping with the remodel. The finishing work they're going to tackle is saving me thousands of dollars.

It's for business. He's arriving Sunday afternoon and leaving Monday evening, so it won't be a long visit, but it will give him a chance to see the house.
