Saturday I spent the morning tidying up the front yard. I'm pulling out a couple of the rose bushes that obstruct access to the water faucet. I'll probably replant the spot with a dwarf fruit tree in the fall. In the afternoon I worked on leveling the flagstones under the pergola. I got about halfway done, so I may get that project finished next weekend. It will be nice to get the park bench set up out there so it won't keep cluttering up my living room.
Sad garden news is that the cats had a field day, as it were, and dug holes in several of my raised beds. They went under the squash trellis and dug up most of the root vegetables that were just sprouting. (At least they didn't bother the squash, which would have made me really upset.) On the bright side, I'm starting to get ripening fruits on the strawberries, tomatoes, raspberry, and runner beans.
In the evening, I harvested a bunch of artichokes. I seriously underestimated the productivity of those plants. I expected to get 2-3 artichokes from each one. I didn't realize that after harvesting the large ones, I would get lots of baby artichokes. Now I just have to figure out how to preserve them all. I started by freezing some; I had to make a batch of strawberry jam to empty out enough space in the freezer to add a pint of artichokes. I'm contemplating pickling some in vinegar, which would allow me to store them at room temperature, but I would have to buy more canning jars. Decisions, decisions.
