09:01 am: Spending time spending money
This weekend I got quite a bit accomplished, though not entirely what I expected.

First, I got this || close to catching up on washing all my dishes. (Three pans, a mixing bowl, and a cheese grater were all that remained of my backlog.) But then I cooked again, and everything piled back up. <sigh>

Friday morning I decided to go on a shopping trip to a bathroom showroom in search of new towel racks that would fit better with my Asian design scheme than the ones I have now. Sadly, although they had plenty of drawer pulls that would be perfect if they were bigger, the towel rack selection was rather sparse. I did get a few printouts of information about possibilities, but nothing too exciting. However, as I was just about to walk out the door, I spotted a vanity with bamboo on the front that would be exactly perfect.

When I asked for information about it, I was told that they were in fact selling that floor display for 60% off. I went home to think about it, because at 3' in length, it's far too big to fit in either one of my bathrooms. I am planning a future remodel of the master bath (to add a shower), and if I am going to enlarge the bathroom anyway, I could incorporate a larger vanity into the design. After sleeping on it, I decided that it looked so perfect, I couldn't pass up the opportunity, so I drove my parents' minivan back to the store and bought it. (Interesting note: It took two guys to carry the vanity from the shop to put it in the trunk, whereas I managed to get it from the trunk to my master bedroom by myself. Girl power!) I also splurged and ordered the matching mirror, since a mirror is useful even if it's not in a bathroom.

Eventually I'll have to pick a vessel for it, since that wasn't included. I'm considering either stone to mimic a Japanese garden or bamboo to continue the theme. For the time being, though, it's just going to act as a dresser.

The rest of the weekend was mostly spent on yard work: weeding, mulching, watering, and re-potting plants. There's no shortage of tasks. I'm really happy with the way my tomatoes are growing; they're starting to blossom in earnest, so it shouldn't be long before I start seeing fruit. I'm also beginning to get seeds on the buckwheat, so that's exciting, and the potatoes should be ready to harvest in a couple weeks.

That is a gorgeous vanity! (Not that you solicited opinions [or that it will matter for some years], but I like the stone vessel with it, personally.) Agree that it's a smart idea to use it as a dresser in the meantime, because I was wondering where you would put it.

Thanks! And it definitely will take years. I'm hoping that I can get the kitchen renovation done next summer, but that will only happen if I can have it done for $20K or less. (It's a small kitchen, but I need structural work...) After that plus the Japan trip, my savings will be pretty low, so it will take a while to accumulate enough for another big project.
