06:13 pm: Exercise, excavation, exhaustion
My "weekend" was split between Monday and Thursday this week, because I had to join the other canine handlers for two days of self-defense training on Tuesday and Wednesday. It was certainly interesting, and some of the techniques could come in handy.

I spent most of Monday working on trimming and digging up weeds. Now that we are having nice weather, it's almost time to plant out the summer vegetables. The flowers in the front yard have really taken off, and even the orchid left behind by the previous homeowner is blooming. I replaced the deceased Japanese maple with a pie cherry tree. (Most sweet cherries require too many chill hours in winter to grow here.)

I devoted pretty much all of today to preparing the area to be paved under the pergola. I started by getting rid of as many weeds as possible and distributing some of the topsoil to my other raised beds. After that, I spent the rest of the afternoon digging a big hole. I didn't quite finish, because there was a big root and a sprinkler pipe making it difficult to get everything with the shovel. Also, my hands needed a break before they got too many blisters. I'll probably work on it more next Monday.

The front yard is all perennial plants?

Mostly. The bunny tail grass is an annual, but it reseeds. The blue flower is also an annual, which is a good thing, because it was supposed to be white but the nursery sent the wrong variety.
