06:50 pm: The Circle of Life
On Monday the 2nd, I took the train down to San Jose to meet up with gnine, xparrot, and their parents. We went on a tour of the Winchester Mystery House, which was designed by the widow of the man responsible for the Winchester rifle. The inside of the house is a crazy labyrinth, with stairs that dead-end at the ceiling, windows that face walls, and doors that open onto nothing but air. (You can see the "door to nowhere" on the right side of the photo.) After lunch we ate at a nice Mediterranean restaurant (where they set my cheese on fire!). They drove me back to my apartment, where gnine and xparrot stuck around for a few hours to share some TV watching and manga recommending.

Other than that, nothing much has been happening around here. Well...technically, it's life and death out there, but I can watch it from the comfort of my living room. Out on my balcony, the ladybug larvae have started feasting on the aphids. Yay for beneficial insects! In addition, a bird has recently built a nest on the light fixture right outside my front door.

I guess it's just that time of year...

That will be fun. ^_^

A big hunk of asiago cheese doused with brandy and set on fire, then spritzed with fresh lemon juice and served with pita. Not bad at all.

I have never been to the Winchester Mystery House. I wanna go, too!

...was the fiery cheese deliberate?

(I'm also happy to hear about the ladybugs vs the aphids. Aphids creep me out. How are the potatoes doing?)

...please ignore the cheese. I can read.

(No, you can't.)

Yes. Yes, I can! She used invisible pixels.

We'll have to make plans.

How are the potatoes doing?

Spectacular so far. The German Butterball is twice as tall as any of the others, though the All Blue is catching up.

You are making me hungry. :(

I forgot to ask: Are the ladybugs on your balcony wild, or did you specifically buy larvae to go after the aphids?

They're wild. I'm hoping to encourage a healthy ecosystem, small as it might be.

Your bird in the nest photographs very well. I know we have one, but the leaves on the honeysuckle vine are covering it so well I can't even find it any more. But every time I use the front door the robin flies out toward the street and bawls me out. It chirps very loudly over and over again. We put a big sign on the front door to ask folks to use the side door, but we still have to pick up the paper on the front stoop.

That cheese does sound good. I'll bet it's beautiful in the dark.

The Germans I know really know and appreciate their potatoes, so I'm not surprised it's a fast growing plant. ^_^
