08:29 pm: Birthdays are better with friends and chocolate
This has definitely been an eventful weekend.

It started early Saturday morning, when I got a call from my real estate agent saying that my offer for the house I'm trying to buy has finally been accepted. Things have been set in motion! Now I just have to get an inspection done and hammer out the specific details of my loan. I will probably have more to report next week. If everything goes well, I may be able to move in June.

This morning I began by opening my birthday presents, which were all awesome. Then I set off for downtown SF, where I met up with mangaroo at Fort Mason. There happened to be both a book sale and a farmer's market going on, and I bought things at each one. Then we headed for the main event, which was the San Francisco Chocolate Salon, an event center filled with tables where crowds gathered to taste free samples of gourmet chocolate. (Oh, and there was alcohol, too. Shhh!) Perhaps ironically, I didn't actually buy any chocolate, but I did buy some flavored olive oil and balsamic vinegar.

mangaroo drove me back to my apartment, where I made some chana masala (gratuitous spice picspam) for a late lunch. After the food was done, we sat back and watched the third Odoru Daisousasen movie. It didn't have English subtitles, so I put on the Japanese captions and translated. As sara_tanaquil reported last summer, it was cheesy yet fun. There were a lot of great moments, and we spent a fair amount of time trying to remember which episodes/specials/movies contained the characters that were brought back or referenced. (I think Keiichi was the most shocking.)

All in all, it's been a wonderful time.

Happy happy birthday! I am so bad at keeping track of that stuff.

Oh, man, I am so jealous that I missed the simul-translation of Odoru 3. Someday maybe I'll find a version with subtitles and find out what happened in the other 70% I didn't get the first time.

And YAY for progress on the house! I look forward to ongoing reports. Is this a bank foreclosure sale?? I would be so furious at the bank if I were the seller trying to unload this house (which is no doubt A GEM OF A HOUSE, so that came out wrong!).

We can always watch it on our Japan trip if someone has a laptop that can play Japanese DVDs.

Is this a bank foreclosure sale??

It's a short sale, so it hasn't been foreclosed. That's why it took them so long to come to a decision. The bank had to decide if the loss they're taking on the loan was worth getting it sold, or if they should hold out for more money.
