There will be wine one way or another!

Things have been going well for me the past couple of weeks. I had to work on Thanksgiving, but I did bake a batch of pumpkin/raisin bread squares and take them in to share. I've been slowly accumulating kumquats from my tree, and I have about 2/3 cup in the freezer so far. My homemade peppermint schnapps is continuing to mature, and though it started as a pale yellow-green color, it has darkened to a rich amber. That's certainly not the color I expected, though it's very pretty to look at.

This weekend I was able to arrange a swap to give me four days off in a row, from Friday to Monday. I used the opportunity to go visit Jenn in Sacramento. First I went to Concord, where she and her friend joined me for some shopping at used book stores. I wound up buying about ten cookbooks plus various novels. We had lunch at an Indian restaurant that had an absolutely scrumptious array of food at the buffet. We stuffed ourselves silly and left hoping that we had the recipes for some of the food in our cookbooks.

Next we headed out to go wine-tasting...or so we thought. We were following the map directions, but we couldn't seem to locate the street that was supposed to take us to the highway. We drove up and down the same road for half an hour before we figured out that the directions were written for someone starting on the road from the opposite direction, and we had to turn left instead of right as the map instructed. Finally we made it to Amador County and managed to visit three wineries before closing time. I bought a grand total of eight bottles.

I spent the night at Jenn's apartment, where we dined on cheese and crackers while watching Avatar. I spent the morning reading curled up on the couch with her two kitties keeping me warm. We had a breakfast of pumpkin waffles, followed by the final disc of Avatar, and then a deluxe sushi lunch that was quite amazing.

Carrying back eight bottles of wine, ten cookbooks, and six novels in my little overnight that was an adventure. I made it home all right, though now I have to get myself a wine rack.

This coming weekend I put myself open for overtime on Sunday, because I've floated up to the top 10% of the list and I want to sink back down. I've already spent the extra overtime pay by treating myself to a set of high-quality kitchen knives. I'm really enjoying my cooking experiments, and I think I should have good tools for all the chopping and slicing. Tonight's experiment was lentil soup with dried apricots from one of my new cookbooks, and it's pretty tasty.

Now I'd better get to bed, since it's back to work bright and early in the morning.
