08:36 am: Grateful for the weekend
Japan doesn't have Thanksgiving in the American sense, but it does have a holiday this time of year called "Labor Thanksgiving," which gives one day off, resulting in a three-day weekend.

I managed to use the time to wash enough dishes to clear off the table for some pumpkin pie making, and then I finally swept the floor, so it looks much nicer.

I also paid a visit to Amika, the new grocery store that just opened last week. As I expected, most of the foreign products were from China/Korea, but they did have a few from the US, Brazil, and Australia. They have a huge section for many different flavors of curry and fried rice, but sadly every single one has some kind of meat/seafood or at the very least lard in it. No vegetarian Indian curry for the Japanese palate, no sir.

I did pick up a few things, though, including some bite-size camembert spring rolls. I fried some up to try right away, and they were pretty good, particularly when I spread plum ketchup on them. It never ceases to amaze me how well cheese and fruit go together.

Among all the things at the store, there was one specific product that caught my eye. They carry mint chocolate chip ice cream in 4 liter cartons. That justifies the store's existence right there. I only wish it had been around during the summer...

Other than that, I spent most of my time playing Warcraft. megory and I got our characters to level 60 and bought our epic land mounts. Hopefully next weekend we'll be able to start questing in Outland.

Y'know, I was thinking about you over the (American) holiday and realized once again that I could never work in another country because I expect certain holidays off and would feel put-upon for having to work them. I am so parochial.

Does the Japanese holiday usually fall on the same weekend? Or was this just chance because our Thanksgiving was earlyish?

It's always on November 23rd, it's merely a coincidence that it happened to be on a Friday this year, giving a three day weekend at the same time as the American Thanksgiving weekend.

4 liters!!!

Hmmm...actually, ice cream sounds pretty good right now. However, although I've been eating mostly garbage lately (one part MRE, one part phone call to Domino's), I haven't really been eating any "junk food" since I relocated.

I'm not sure whether to be proud of myself or not.
