OTP?

No one here could figure out what an OTP is. Can you help us out?

Thanks, Mom

To be honest, I have no clue myself. I'd guess the "P" stands for "pairing." As for the "OT"..."off-topic"? "Original taste"? "Opposite trend"? I'm just making things up here.

That's it, I fire you from being a fangirl. It stands for One True Pairing, as in you believe in that pairing and no other.

HINT: When you don't understand some online acronym, try here.

Hmm...that sounds kind of discriminatory and closed-minded to me. I mean, I may LIKE one pairing a lot, but I can't see excluding all other possibilities. I would prefer to call it a My Favorite Pairing or Pairing of Choice or something. Am I allowed to make up my own acronym?

Well, I mean within the fandom. As in, "Sirius/Remus is my OTP, so I think Snape/Lupin is disgusting don't read any Snape/Lupin fanfic."

But I think that, in general, it can just mean your favorite pairing.

<scratches head in bewilderment> But then it's misleading. Why not just *say* your favorite pairing to begin with? Why be all high and mighty about it? Plus, there are some series with lots of different pairs that are equally likely, and just because I enjoy a certain one or don't feel like reading about the others, that doesn't make it a One True anything. Instead, it puts me in mind of disputes where people staunchly uphold one particular pair and denigrate anyone who disagrees, and that's just not fun.

And what about pairings that aren't mutually exclusive? Let's say you think Hermione should end up with Ron and Harry should end up with Ginny, and that's what you want to read about. So then do you have Two True Pairings?

(I'm so sheltered. Where would I be without you to explain these things to me?)

Boy, this is getting complicated. I think it has to do with the kind of tongue-in-cheek fangirlism that came up earlier (you know, like, "Sirius/Remus is my OTP!!111!<33333"). It's the pairing you like most; the one you're obsessed with and won't listen to reason when people try to tell you it's not canon. Although some people may knock people that ship a pairing that conflicts with their OTP, that's not really what it means. It just means that you have no interest in that other pairing, because it conflicts with your OTP. If you still like other pairings that conflict with your favorite pairing, that's not your OTP. Also, I would say that if you like more than one pairing in a fandom, you don't have a OTP in that fandom.

Now, I'm not saying that all of this holds true for every person. Maybe there are some people just use it for "the pairing I like." But that's what I think the original meaning of it is, and it still holds that implication for me when I see it.

For further research, I suggest you check out ship_manifesto. It's full of shipping and OTP and fangirl talk. (Plus it's Harry Potter week right now!)

But...I didn't think that was funny. At all. Have I turned into an old curmudgeon? (Don't MESS with my punctuation.)

I guess that's such a narrow definition that I can't see why it would be so widely used. For an acronym to become standard, people have to use it a lot, right? Are there really that many people out there who have one single powerful obsession and close their eyes to everything else in the fandom? I mean, I have obsessions...but I'm trying to think of any fandom where I like ONLY one pairing and nothing else interests me. Nothing is coming to mind. Even things like YYH where I'm strongly in favor of H/K, I also like Yuusuke/Keiko.

I think I'll go back to hiding in my books now. Modern fandom appears to be a scary place.

<shrug>Everyone has their limits. I don't care if it becomes the national language, you'll never catch me using AOL-speak, and I still cringe when I see it. I was thrown at first by the fangirl-y talk on LJ, but now I've gotten to like the make-fun-of-myself attitude it has.

You don't think a lot of people have one pairing that they obsess about way more than others??

I've really gotta laugh at your Yu Yu Hakusho example. I never saw any Yuusuke/Keiko doujinshi in that big pile BOX you have, or read any Y/K fanfic that you wrote. And did you make a whole tape of cute moments they had? No. :P

I think I'll go back to hiding in my books now. Modern fandom appears to be a scary place.
Well, suit yourself, I guess. But I think you're just overreacting now. Especially since you have nothing to go on but my impression of the word, and I'm hardly an expert on the subject.

MORE than others, sure. Not all characters are equal. It's just to the *exclusion* of others...kinda takes the fun out of it. The way I look at it, the more pairings there are (and here I have to stick in my caveat that there ought to be at least SOME support for the pairing in canon), the more the happiness is spread around.

I've really gotta laugh at your Yu Yu Hakusho example.

But do they *make* Y/K doujinshi? I can't buy what I can't find. ...Besides, I did write fanfic about them. That must count.

But I think you're just overreacting now.

That would be the I half of my XNTJ speaking. A small, cozy circle of friends, that I can handle. You're talking to a person who's terrified to use the telephone. It's a big, scary world out there in general. My master plan of letting my friends filter through everything and point out the important bits to me has worked pretty well so far.
