06:16 pm: Sometimes students make the best teachers
This morning I had my chat session with the Hawaiian exchange student. Since I know she likes drawing and manga, I shared my drawing problem with her. She said what I needed was someone to sit next to me and slap my hand when I try to add too many details. ^_^ She gave me tips on drawing chibis and anime-style eyes.

This is what I managed to accomplish today. It's still pretty elementary, but I think I'm making progress. I was especially proud of the eye in the middle, since I always have so much trouble trying to get the eyes right.

I even did one chibi human figure. (It's supposed to be megory dancing, though I didn't put quite enough motion/action in it.) I'm hopeful that if I keep practicing I might turn out some respectable pictures eventually.

When I got home after work, I was excited to find a delivery slip for my sewing machine. (I was kind of surprised, since the order page still lists it as not having shipped.) The truck should come back around during the next couple hours to deliver it.

Aww, the reading bunny! If you don't mind a little constructive criticism, though, I think the ears should be bigger. Bigger ears are always cuter.

To illustrate, which is cuter?

A. B.

Also, I think the little dot eyes on the reading bunny are cuter than the detailed eyes on the bottom one.

Dancing megory is adorable!!

<g> The more comments, the better. We'll zero in on your ideal bunny.

Can you tell that was after my student left and there wasn't anyone to slap my hand for me?

The Uzaki-bunny in my icon is pretty darn close to what I think is cutest. But I don't necessarily think it would make a good pattern to sew on stuff.

Ah, I see. Just remember that in this case, less is more. Also, as advice for doing the quicker, simpler thing, try drawing a bunch of quick sketches of something. Don't use your eraser, don't spend more than a few seconds on any one sketch. Just zip through them.

Oh, the pain! ;_; I know I should do that, but eraser use is so addictive.

Don't make me come over there and take it away from you!

(Try using a pen...?)

What...? You think there's something strange about sketching bunnies and then scanning them in to illustrate a point...? I can't see why...

They are great sketches!

You learn so quickly. Your student really got right to the quick with you.

I can hardly wait to hear about the machine. I guess we know what you'll be doing this weekend!

She did seem to be a touch impatient with my helplessness at one point. But I really appreciated her advice.

No kidding! I spent a lot of my free time today reading the manual for the pattern-design software. I'm going to have fun playing with this.

That bald fellow is so good!

He's all sad that I didn't give him hair like the other character. ^_~

I seem to be coming along okay on the disembodied parts...it's putting them all together into a complete person that's tricky. (Where's Dr. Frankenstein when you need him?)
