06:59 pm: Crate happens
The week started off a little rough...Rei went potty in the kitchen again Monday night. So, after I got home from work on Tuesday afternoon, I immediately set about assembling his crate. The wood blends in with my other furniture fairly well, and it effectively doubles as a handy end table. I started getting him used to it by tossing some treats inside for him to find.

I had to shove him in a bit the first night, because he only wanted to go in halfway. He didn't bark or howl or anything; once he was inside, he seemed relatively content. After nearly a week of using it, he now hangs out in it on his own during the day. And I don't have to worry about cleaning up his messes in the house anymore, so that's nice.

I bought him a bunch more chew toys and chew treats yesterday. Hopefully those will help keep him occupied for a while. I also took him and the neighbor dog to the local dog park to run around. He behaves quite well when meeting other dogs...I just need to break him of the habit of jumping up on people.

I've been spending most of my free time sewing Benny's Halloween costume; we're having our annual Halloween party at work this Wednesday. I expect I'll have pictures of that ready for my next post.

My peas are sprouting in the garden, which is fun. The persimmons are turning orange and should be ready to harvest in a couple weeks. I'm also getting the last rush of beans before the plants die down.

Aw, I'm glad to hear Rei has taken so well to the crate. How does he react when you let him out in the morning? Is he all excited at starting the day? Or does he want to snooze 5 more minutes?

As soon as I open the door, he immediately comes out and rolls on his back to get belly rubs.

Crates are wonderful, magical things. Ebony slept in hers until we had a friend visit with his dog...and his dog didn't go in a crate, so she realized "Hey, I don't have to be in my crate either!" [and yes, she INSISTED on being put into it at night for bed, up until that point.] She still does get into the crate all on her own, when we visit my Mom.

Oh, if you can break him of the jumping up on people habit, TELL ME HOW! We've been trying to do that with Ebony since we got her, and she's nearly 4 now! XD She is a tad bit hyper so it might not happen anyway. We discovered she's likely a Dalmatian mix when she got her knee surgery last May, and had Dalmatian spots on her skin! O_o[

Goodness! I'm trying the "turn your back and ignore the dog until his paws are on the floor" method. The problem with Rei is, he jumps with a big goofy smile on his face, and his teeth crash into my elbow due to the angle, which is kind of painful. That's why I'm really hoping he gets over it.

Boy, that sounds familiar. Complete with the goofy grin. ^_^ I actually don't recall anymore if we tried that method with Ebony or not. Either we did and we didn't do it long enough, or it never worked. XD Although when I'm the one that takes her outside, she has to sit before I put her leash on her [we call her "The Mexican Jumping Puppy" for a reason. Got kind of scary when she got old enough that her jump took her head even with my hubby's...and he's 6'!]. For some reason, although she listens to the hubby better in general [she DEFINITELY picked him. XD], when it comes to getting that leash on when she goes outside, she seems to listen better to me. *shrugs*

And teeth crashing? Oh yah, I've had that happen with Ebony. Amazing how painful it is, when they aren't even *biting* you, just knocking their teeth against whatever portion of your anatomy they hit.
