05:14 pm: Visitation
Not much information on the job situation yet. The canine team decided to go with a simple proposal sticking very closely to the status quo. There has been no response from management so far, but I expect to hear something tomorrow.

In an exciting turn of events, sara_tanaquil visited the area this weekend, and mangaroo brought her over on Saturday for an overnight stay. She helped me harvest potatoes and blueberries and then joined me in a game of Alea Iacta Est. We ended the game tied for points, which is pretty amazing.

We used the freshly harvested items to make cheesy potato casserole and berry cobbler for supper. We proceeded to stuff ourselves, because the food was so good. We watched some TV and discussed manga for a while until it was time for bed.

After seeing sara_tanaquil off in the morning, I waited for the cloud cover to lift and then worked on transplanting watermelon seedlings out into the bed that had been freed up by the potato harvest. I still had extra seedlings once that was done, so I gave several to the neighbors and carved out little spaces around the yard to plant the rest. After I used up all the seedlings, I set about weeding for the rest of the day.

I find myself on occasion hanging out in the garden just staring at my plots of beans. It's interesting to see all the minor differences that are visible even at such an early stage. I can hardly wait until they start producing flowers and pods.

This Alea Iacta Est looks like a Roman monopoly.

Congratulations on your harvest. Is this the normal time to harvest potatoes?

Supper made from a fresh harvest sounds really good.

Why do you grow seedlings instead of sowing seeds in the field? I hope you have a great harvest of watermelons come summer or fall.

Beans always remind me of the life sciences classes I took in college. Haha @ your staring at them. If you'd been born 150 years earlier, Mended wouldn't have had a chance at describing recessive vs. dominant genes first. =)

It is in this climate. In colder regions, this is planting season, with harvest in the fall.

The potatoes were taking up the space where I would have planted them. I grew them in pots so they would have a head start while the potatoes were finishing up.

If I planted them from seed now, they wouldn't get big enough to produce any fruit by the time the growing season ended.

I see. When did you plant the potatoes then? In the winter?

Growing seedlings in pots makes sense now. I'll try that once I move out of San Francisco. The cold foggy weather in the summer doesn't help with growing things.

Good luck with work today! I hope all goes well with the ongoing dispute.

I spent the whole time picking holes in it for not being historically accurate. You never want to play ancient-history based games with me. Or (most) science-based games with s_vamp.

I was surprised that we tied in the end though! I was sure s_vamp was going to clean up on points in the end.

Hahah, are you a history buff? I love history. It would've been nice to hear you pick the game apart. =)

Worse: I teach it for a living. :-) The pickiness knows no limits.

It was a fun game though! I just think I can resist adding a copy to my own collection.

That is COOL! I thought about being a teacher and in fact still do. I teach medical students and residents sometimes. I find teaching very rewarding.

Sounds like an awesome weekend! (Mmm, cheesy potato casserole. It feels like forever since I've had that.)

Thank you for your hospitality! It was so fun (and delicious, I need to make cheesy potato casserole more often).
