07:47 pm: The bowl runneth over
We had lovely weather this weekend--which is starting to worry a lot of people, because with zero rainfall all month, this has been the driest January on record.

I spent most of Saturday recording and editing my second game video: Ruinous. It's annoying when I make a mistake and have to go back and shoot a half hour of play all over again. Still, I think it came out pretty well.

I had time in the afternoon to prune my grape vines, which were quite monstrously tangled, and harvest a big bowl of peas. Then on Sunday morning I worked on planting my spring potatoes, harvesting more kale, and doing a bit of weeding. This year I'm experimenting with intercropping some cucurbits with the potatoes. That way I don't have to rush the potato harvest so that I can plant something else in their space, because the plants will already be there.

I don't think any of the newly planted items will sprout until we get some rain, but in the meantime the warm weather is causing a lot of flowers to open. My ume tree has begun blooming, and so has one of my irises in the front yard. My mulberry and apple trees never got cold enough to go completely dormant; I'm concerned about how that will affect them this season.

My neighbors invited me over to their Superbowl party in the afternoon. I kind of blew them off last year (I actively dislike football), but it was combined with a birthday party, so I thought I should attend this year. I didn't have time to cook anything, so I took over my bowl of peas and a box full of kale. Once people started munching on the peas, they disappeared quickly, and several of the guests were excited to take home bags of fresh kale.

My remaining gardening goals for this month are more weeding and pruning, and then transplanting more strawberries so I can get them out of pots and into the ground, where I won't have to water them as often.

I honestly hadn't realized it hadn't rained at all until the weathermen started bemoaning the (unwanted) record dry spell for last month.

Well, if nothing else, the kale is a clearly a good neighbor gift! And it's so pretty in the yard.

I was glad for the good weather on the weekends, so I could get at least some amount of yard work done, but my strawberries are very dry. They're lucky it's still chilly enough that they're mostly dormant, though they are starting to wake up.

Definitely.

I did save some for myself. I'm determined to try doing something with it. I will probably attempt kale chips first, then see how it goes from there.

Wow, I'm impressed you went! A friend invited me to the Superbowl party of a friend of hers, and I told her I'd rather go lie naked in the snow.

(Now I'm seriously considering whether that was an exaggeration. I think it depends on the length of time we're talking about. I'd probably watch the Superbowl over getting hypothermia.)

I almost didn't, but as it turned out, nobody here cared much about the two teams playing. So it was mostly a "sit around and chat while having vodka punch" potluck party. The biggest drawback was that there were too many people there with small children for it to become another board game night.

Ha!

That's not so bad, then! See, these are things you discover by actually being social. Good job, you!

I know, right?

I received quite a shock when I asked Jenn if she would be interested in attending the local board game convention in May, and she decided she was much too introverted to enjoy the experience. I was like...wait...this is the convention I attended ALONE last year. She thinks she's more introverted than I am? When did THAT happen?

I've been really impressed at the initiatives you've taken to play games with new people. I don't know that I'm brave enough to go to those kinds of things by myself. Though so far I have found people at board game conventions/meet-ups to be friendly and inviting, so I could see myself getting over that. Maybe.

I've heard some people telling horror stories about the unwashed Magic fanboy masses who treat women like alien life forms, but I've never run into anyone even remotely disagreeable after over a year of attending meetups and conventions. In fact, the only person I've encountered who rubbed me the wrong way was a woman who never listened to rules explanations and played on her cell phone during games, so she never knew what to do on her turn. Her personality was pleasant enough, though.
