10:00 am: Things that go bump in the night
I have been slacking a bit on my updates. Last weekend I met some friends up in Richmond to go shopping for fall plants. I picked up a lime tree, a flowering quince, and a carnation. They drove me back home with all the purchases and stayed for a few board games.

During the week, I had some more appliance trouble. This one was definitely my fault. My dishwasher soap was running out, so I went to get the backup bottle, which I thought was the same kind. I started the machine and went to bed. When I got up in the morning, there were suds spilling out all over the floor. Turns out, the new bottle was meant for washing by hand, not by machine.

The dishwasher has a failsafe mechanism by which it shuts itself off if it detects any leakage. I had to call a repair guy to come and reset the machine so that it would run again. That was an expensive mistake. I'm just glad the wood floor wasn't damaged.

On Wednesday, we had a Halloween party at work and dressed the beagles in costumes during training. Benny was quite a spectacle as the Flash.

Speaking of work, there's going to be a new incoming flight starting in a few weeks that arrives very early in the morning, and they are authorizing overtime to bring in people to work it. I volunteered to cover it while I'm on the morning shift, which will mean leaving the house before 5am to get there in time. We'll see if management takes me up on that.

This weekend I went down to Palo Alto for a few more hours of gaming. It's a shame that the highway bus doesn't go there anymore; I always have to waste some time waiting for a transfer, making the trip even longer than it already is. I end up spending nearly as much time traveling as I do playing.

Sunday I went out shopping to stock up on groceries in preparation for megory coming to visit in a little over a week. Excitement for our pending excursion to Tokyo is building.

Hee...Benny has a speedy tail in the photo.

Sorry about the dishwasher! It's a good thing indeed that the floor wasn't damaged.

Where will the lime go? How long until you can expect it to produce?

Where will the lime go?

I'm thinking of putting it in the front yard, in front of the blueberries.

I don't know...I haven't had much luck with citrus. My kaffir lime froze to death, my blood orange died in the spring for no apparent reason, and only one of my kumquat trees has ever produced anything. Yet I'm surrounded on all sides by highly productive citrus trees in my neighbors' yards. I'm hoping this one will do well, because it's a more "standard" variety.

If it survives, I might start to get something from it next year.

I've seen what non-dishwasher soap can do in a dishwasher (at the time I was maybe 10 so I just thought it was funny), so I'm glad it didn't ruin your floors!

Mmmm, fresh limes. Sounds like a great tree to have in your yard!

I just hope I can keep it alive. Fingers crossed!

Flash is SO appropriate for Benny!

Lime tree! I smell mojitos on the way! Quinces and carnations are nice, too.

I'm so excited. I can hardly wait to taste a few things from your garden!

There's not much this time of year, other than a few lingering cherry tomatoes (and all the kale that I never eat), but there's lots of stuff in the freezer.
