06:22 am: 2014 Kickstarter Game Update Week 26
Game I Backed:

New Dawn
Status: 41% funded

This game, whose launch on Kickstarter has been delayed since January, is the thematic sequel to Among the Stars. It is similar in that it uses the placement of square cards into a tableau, but the actual game mechanics are completely different. I backed right away, because I've been waiting for this since Rahdo's video preview at Essen last fall, but I was surprised that the price was so high.

Game I Viewed:

Dungeon Lords Anniversary Edition
Status: Funded

In this worker placement game, each player is the master of a dungeon and is trying to fill it with traps and monsters (and ghosts) to repel the inevitable invasion of heroes seeking treasure. The anniversary edition contains the first expansion as well as some promo material. I just received the base game in a trade at KublaCon, and I haven't had a chance to play it yet, so I wasn't willing to back this one without knowing more about whether I would like it (especially since the early bird slots were full by the time I saw it--they apparently sold out within three hours of launch). I can say, however, that the rulebook is hysterically funny.

Honorable Mention:

Treasure Chest: Realistic Resource Tokens for Board Games
Status: Funded

This project, produced by the same person who designed the highly successful games Viticulture and Euphoria: Build a Better Dystopia, is a box full of over a hundred high-quality resource tokens that can be used to bling out other board games.

Ugh, so much temptation, and me with so little money. ;_; I'm probably not going to be able to resist Treasure Chest (why do I love shiny things?), but I don't think I can afford New Dawn or Dungeon Lords right now, so I'm not even sure I want to take a close look at either game to see how interested I might be.

LOL! I took one look at that and knew it was meant for w_10_00. I think the design of the box speaks to the maker's eye for detail.

I like shiny things and realistic shapes and materials, but I also like symmetry, so colored cubes are okay by me. I don't have any of the games that use these resources, but if I did, I would only want the bling if the game's original resources were all different shapes and sizes to begin with.

Ordinarily I am satisfied by cubes, and I tend to be opposed to spending money on bling just for the sake of bling. What's really tempting me about this one is that the resources would work for the Dragon and the Emperor. (Well, I'd have to say red clay = fire and ore = spirit, but the rest would fit.)

I've resisted so far, but there's still over a week left for me to cave.

I'm taking a second look at Forge War to decide whether I really need it. It has a solo variant now, so I may actually get a chance to play it if I keep my pledge, but it still hasn't won me over completely.

Cave! Cave! You've already developed two games. Who knows how many more you may do? You should stockpile bling!

I love this idea, though I think the gems would be better for spirit and I feel like we could find you a better fire. (Meeple Source is actually making "fire" as part of their Kickstarter campaign, but A. I'm not sure how well a wooden bit would go with the resin ones and B. it looks like a campfire, which is not very appropriate.)

The gems have to be water, though, because they're blue.

I can always use the red acrylic gems that I got for Cupid's Holiday as the fire. They're pretty big, though.

Oh, duh, I completely forgot about water. Yes, I see where the gems are better for water than spirit.

Bummer! I didn't read your post until today, and I missed the Kickstarter by two days! I agree that they'd be great for your game.

I succumbed to temptation and dropped Forge War in favor of getting the Treasure Chest. So you'll be able to play with them when you come next year.
