In somewhat positive news about the bus situation, the bus company instituted a new short-route highway bus that will fill in some of the commuting gaps left by the express bus. It won't go all the way into SF, but it goes far enough to get me to work, so that's nice. It also terminates at the San Bruno BART station, which makes it a reasonable way to pick up the BART for transit to the East Bay (if I don't want to catch it at the airport), and also relatively convenient for shopping.

I made an attempt to schedule an appointment for a medical checkup here in town, hoping for a clinic I could reach easily by taking a single bus, but they weren't accepting new patients until the end of March. So, I called my old doctor from when I used to live in Millbrae and managed to get an appointment for the next day. It's just a pain to get to that office, because it isn't on any direct routes and I have to transfer. It's rather annoying to have to schedule ~1 hour for transit time just to get ~5 miles. I could bike faster, but I shudder to think of riding down El Camino with all that traffic and no bike lane. Anyway, that trip took up most of the morning on Friday.

I spent most of the rest of the weekend pruning the plants in my front yard and putting protective sleeves on some of the cards from my recently acquired games.

By the way, if anyone is wondering about all these posts mentioning board games and would be interested in trying something far more entertaining than the traditional standby games (e.g. Monopoly, Trivial Pursuit, Clue, Scrabble) but isn't sure where to start, there's a nice top ten list on Youtube from one of my favorite game reviewers. I can personally vouch for Lords of Waterdeep, Pandemic/Forbidden Island, and Dominion.

That is great news!

I think I'll want to sleeve InEx when I get the final version. I'll definitely be seeking your advice then. I haven't even opened Star Realms to see if those cards will inspire me to sleeve. (I feel better knowing that Wil Wheaton eschews sleeving his MtG cards. If you're not going to sleeve Magic, you're not going to sleeve anything.)

I am definitely going to be sleeving Star Realms. As a deckbuilder, it is going to have to endure a lot of shuffling, and the cards have black edges, which show damage quickly as the ink chips away to reveal the white stock underneath.

Isn't there a side road somewhere you could use instead?

Not really. Delaware Ave. has a bike lane, but it only goes as far as Burlingame (about 1/3 of the way). Old Bayshore Highway has less traffic, but it's right on the water, which means it suffers from strong wind AND it's on the wrong side of 101, so I'd have to go past my destination to reach the overpass and then backtrack, adding at least a mile to the trip.

Delaware Ave. → California Drive is the route that Google suggests, which is probably an improvement over ECR, if only because there is a bike lane at least some of the time. I think the road is in better condition, too.

So it's 6 miles instead of 5? Wouldn't that make it still faster than the bus?

Probably faster, but I don't know that the extra effort of biking into the wind is worth the ~25 minutes I'd save. Perhaps if I were desperately in a hurry on a day with good weather.

Glad to hear of some relief on the bus front! Did you ever contact them to make your views known? It's important for the transportation companies to understand who's actually depending on them.

When the bus stop nearest my house was damaged in an accident and simply disappeared from the route (the bus refused to stop there), I was ticked off, but I didn't use the bus often enough to call and complain. When the bus stop sign finally reappeared after a year or more, I realized I probably should have called to complain sooner.

I haven't bothered, because I figure the changes are all financially inspired (to service the stops with the most riders using the fewest buses). If they're making cuts to save money, they're not going to change their plans just because it's less convenient for me.

Also, thanks for the link to the runthrough! I didn't have time to listen to the whole thing right away, but I did use that button-skipping thing he does to page through the whole list and find out what was on it. I either played or watched (can't remember which) a demo game of Augustus at GenCon last year, and was pretty impressed with it - it's on my someday wish list. I'll have to try out the rest of the games he mentions at some point (besides the four you vouch for, which are of course also among my favorites).

I think it looks like a really good gateway game, though a little light on strategy for my personal taste. I can see how it would make for an entertaining evening with an eclectic group.
