07:48 pm: The work is good...if you can get it
Most of my news this week is about work, for a change. On Wednesday we had our annual canine evaluations. Various exercises are set up and the canine teams are evaluated on how well the canine responds to the targets and how well the handler uses the leash and reads the canine's body language. Benny did a fantastic job. (They wanted to give him a perfect score, but that's Just Not Done, so they knocked off half a point for appearances.) Also, he just passed his 5000 seizure mark, which is spectacular considering he hasn't even been working two years yet.

Then on Saturday I officially received my furlough notice. As an employee of the Department of Homeland Security, I'm subject to the sequester-driven budget cuts. I'll be assigned up to 14 furlough days between the end of April and the end of September. It is unknown at this point whether I'll be able to choose any of the days, or if they'll be assigned to me by the scheduling team.

My days off this week were mostly taken up by weeding. I managed to clear the worst of the weeds out of the front yard. Hopefully it won't look too shabby when I have visitors. I also spent some time finishing up my tomato report from last year. It's making me really excited for my bean trial this summer.

Sorry to hear about the furlough. (I went through a University-mandated version 4 years ago during the last great state budget crisis.) If an agreement is reached, will the furloughs be automatically retracted?

Congrats to you and Benny for the high scores!

That's what they say. I'm not holding my breath, though.

Congratulations to Benny! And boo to furloughs. I hope you'll be able to avoid those.

re: tomatoes - it's interesting that you had so much trouble with the Trenton's Tigers and Pink Berkeleys, because those both did really well for us.

Congratulations to Benny!

Thanks!

Yeah, it is definitely not news I like to hear just when I'm planning an expensive kitchen renovation.

I'm glad they did well for you. I suspect you don't have early blight problems. If it weren't for the disease, they would both have done much better here.

This year I'm trying four yellow/orange varieties. I don't want to have to worry about competing with the birds.

I hope you're able to choose. The less money part sucks, but more time for your garden (or a summer staycation) ain't so bad.

Five *thousand* seizures?? Wow, I had no idea people brought that many questionable items through the airport. I was imagining like 1 or 2 a day if that. Wow. Yay for Benny!

Benny's minimum per day is 6-8, and that's on a really slow day. He averages 10-12, and his record (so far) is 38.
