I couldn't help it. I had to make a K9 icon.

Benny arrived late Tuesday night. He was a little bit shaky coming off the plane, but he was his regular chipper self by the next morning. I spent the rest of the week walking him around the airport so he could get used to the smells and sounds. He'll be eased into working flights in a few days.

My first CSA shipment was delivered on Wednesday. It contained a mix of things ranging from items I buy for myself all the time (potatoes, avocados) to things I buy on occasion (apples, strawberries) to vegetables I would never buy on my own (broccoli, collard greens). It's quite an adventure searching for recipes. Today I baked asparagus onion casserole, and it turned out awesome. I'm just sorry that there was only enough asparagus in the box to make one batch.

On Saturday I met up with mangaroo at the Cherry Blossom Festival. We shopped at Kinokuniya for a while, then walked around the various shops and street vendors. It turns out there's a small store in Japantown selling Hawaiian goods, and I was able to pick up a bottle of coconut syrup there. That was one thing I really enjoyed from my trip last summer, and I'm glad I was able to find it in such a convenient location.

I'm sure I'll get kale at some point. Do you have a favorite way to prepare it?

I put it in everything. It's good just sauteed in olive oil and garlic, but you can also cut finely (I almost do a basil-style chiffonade) and put in stuff like omelets or spaghetti sauce. A friend sneaks it into everything so her kids get greens but don't know it. ;)

Aww, poor guy! :( Glad he recovered so fast, though. I still feel guilty about the trauma Choco suffered on her trip to the US.

How often do you get a CSA shipment? Once a week?

I signed up for the once-a-month service, but there are weekly and biweekly options. I might go biweekly if I manage to get through this box by next week.

You must have posted about this at some point before, but what is CSA?

You'll make a gardener and/or cook of me yet. Someday.

CSA = Community Supported Agriculture

I pay a set fee for a box, and the farm fills the box with whatever fruits and vegetables happen to be in season.

Yay! Just wait until I actually have land for growing things myself...
