06:25 pm: Stocking up
I didn't mean to go so long without posting, but not much has been happening here.

I have been doing more cooking experiments. I bought the sequel to the artisan bread book, Healthy Bread in Five Minutes a Day. I've made a couple things from it, and they turned out all right. I also went to the farmer's market at the Ferry Building last week, but it was small since it was the weekday version. I bought some kumquats to augment my stash (many of the ones on my tree are still partially green), honey, and sliced almonds for baking.

Yesterday I took a trip to San Bruno to stock up on more Indian food ingredients. After I lugged my loaded shopping basket to the counter for the shopkeeper to tally, I had this amusing conversation.

Shopkeeper: Do you do the internet? Do you do YouTube?
Me: ...What?
Shopkeeper: It's too hard to learn from books. Here, I'll show you.

He proceeded to fetch his laptop from his office so that he could demonstrate to me how to search YouTube for videos about cooking Indian food. That was certainly very kind of him, but I have to wonder...was he doing it purely to spread the joy of Indian food, or did he really think I looked like someone who couldn't learn from books...?

Work has been going all right. I was selected for a couple of collateral duties, which include being a presenter for a class on agriculture inspection procedures that is given to the non-agriculture officers, to familiarize them with what we do so that we can have more effective teamwork. I've also put in for a couple more days of overtime, because my name has floated up near the top of the list again. I submitted my preferred dates for reserving time off in the leave draw for this year, but the results for that haven't yet been announced. I heard from the supervisor in charge of the canine program that the request for more positions has been passed up the chain, and they're waiting for port director approval.

In my free time, I've been watching a bunch of TV shows. I ordered a number of DVDs, to the point where I had to buy an additional small bookshelf for my living room because they were overflowing the shelves on my entertainment center.

That about sums it up for January.

The guacamole bread and the stollen with kumquats were absolutely delicious. Although the stollen didn't need anything else, it was really great with the kumquat marmalade. Thanks for sharing the fruit of your hard work.

Good luck for the beagle brigade, and if they go with it and if you get selected, I hope the training doesn't begin until July!

In the shopkeeper's defense, quite a few Indian foods depend on things like pan technique, which is harder to learn from a book without a lot of trial and error. Of course, for people that really enjoy cooking, the trial and error is more than half the fun^^

What shows have you been watching lately? I just finished getting current on Fringe and Numb3rs, and I wouldn't object to some new ideas ;)

I finished marathoning Bones, of which I had previously only caught individual episodes here and there. (It doesn't help that it's on during Thursday night raid time.) Overall I like the atmosphere of the show, even if some of the characters' personality quirks get on my nerves on occasion.

I just started working my way through JAG, which I thought I would like, since I adore both Quantum Leap and NCIS. Sadly, the first half of the first season is very...dry, I suppose, with lackluster dialogue and poor chemistry between the characters and uninspired plots. It starts to pick up around episode 15, though, so I'm not giving up on it yet.
