09:51 pm: The week in review
Friday I had the day off, so I ventured into San Francisco to have a look around Chinatown. I figured that stores would open around 9am, since it was a weekday, so that's when I timed my arrival. It turned out that many of the stores don't open until around 10:30, so mostly all I could see were the building exteriors. There were a couple of shops doing business, so I browsed there, and as it approached 10am the small grocery shops with their tables of vegetables spilling out onto the sidewalk were packed with customers. After picking up a few things there, I headed back home.

On Saturday I had my tae kwon do belt test. The numerous small children had their test before ours. My group consisted of three boys, three teen girls, and three adult women. We all had to show off our kicking and punching abilities, go through our memorized form, and break two boards (one with a punch, one with a kick). I managed to break the first board okay, though I slammed my wrist bone against the wood, from which I now have a nice purple bruise. It took me four tries to break the second board, which was more than anyone else. Regardless, I now have a bright shiny yellow belt.

Sunday morning, I cleaned my kitchen pretty thoroughly, including mopping the floor. I'm sure the hair tumbleweeds will respawn far too quickly, though.

Today I heard an update on the canine situation. They apparently had offered the beagle position to one of my coworkers, who then decided he didn't really want it. So now the chief is recommending me for it, though headquarters still has to make the final determination. However, the ten-week training course starts in mid-July, at which time I will still be doing my cargo training. (Not only that, but if I go then, I won't be able to attend Comiket in August. ;_;) The chief wishes we could postpone so that he wouldn't have to juggle my training schedule around, but the canine training slots are so tightly planned that if I miss this one I'm told I won't get another chance before next year. We'll see how it goes.

The big issue on everyone's mind at work is, of course, the swine flu outbreak. They've issued us lots of hand sanitizer and face masks for those who wish to wear them. The morning shift only gets one small flight from Mexico, and we're all wearing disposable gloves for everything anyway, so there isn't too much concern.

I was wondering if the rules changed for what was allowed in from Mexico. One of the reports I had heard about the swine flu said that it had begun as an avian flu, then mutated to swine flu, and now to one that affects humans. Earlier you had said that bird products were allowed in from Latin America, but not from Asia because of the bird flu.

The use of face masks sounds like one more reasonable level of precaution. With the words "epidemic" and "pandemic" being tossed around, it sounds as if any precaution taken now is well worth it.

Congratulations on the yellow belt and the clean kitchen!...two great accomplishments...^_^

Not so far. Pork isn't allowed from Mexico anyway, due to other diseases, so that hasn't changed.

Congratulations on the yellow belt and the clean kitchen!

Thanks!

Ouch! I'm actually surprised they had you breaking boards so early for tests; I don't think I had to do that in any of the forms I studied until my third belt or so. Then again, I mostly stuck to the softer arts like Aikido, so I'm sure it's different. Anyway, pain aside, congratulations on your belt!

I hope everything goes well with your job, it seems weird that they couldn't move some of the training around. Is your chief going to be willing to delay some of the cargo training until after the canine stuff if they won't move the dates?

Also, did you hear anything about your language test?

That's what he thinks he'll have to do. He's not thrilled about it, but he'd like to have another canine officer sooner rather than later.

Also, did you hear anything about your language test?

Nothing yet.

I am intrigued by your coworker who decided he didn't want the position. Any idea why he changed his mind? (Puppies!)

Where is the ten-week training course held?

I'm not entirely sure. I overheard him talking with someone else about it, and it seemed that some other assignment had caught his interest. I didn't ask outright, though.

Where is the ten-week training course held?

I think it's in Georgia.

There's no manga in Georgia! OK, there might be, but not as much as Otome Road, clearly!

I miss Otome Road SO MUCH.

A classmate of mine also applied for the canine position, and she will be done with her cargo training three weeks before I will, so she wouldn't have a conflict. The one problem is that she really wants a cargo-sniffing labrador rather than a beagle, though she will take a beagle if that's the only dog available. I'm tempted to say she should get the beagle while I wait for the next opportunity, just so I won't have to cancel my Japan trip plans...

I know. I am in serious withdrawal. (And the fact that more than a year between trips to Japan seems to be too long a wait is worrisome for my budget...)

just so I won't have to cancel my Japan trip plans...

Is this trip doomed? I hope not, but it's starting to seem like NONE of us know if we can go.

Congrats on the yellow belt! That's awesome. I don't think I could summon up the guts (or the stamina) to do martial arts.

I don't know what to wish for re: the canine thing... of course I'd like to do Comiket, but, it would be great if you could join the canine team! When do you think you'll find out if they're accepting the chief's recommendation?

I don't know. I imagine it has to be soon, because he mentioned that he would want the new canine person to have some time to hang out with the current canine team before going to training.
