05:18 pm: Away across the sea
We got up and left my apartment by around 7am yesterday, knowing that we would need extra time for megory to rearrange luggage to get the two suitcases we had delivered to the airport to the proper weight. It was raining pretty hard when we first woke up, but by the time we were ready to leave, it was light enough to walk to the station with umbrellas rather than resorting to calling for a taxi.

When we arrived in Osaka Station, however, we found that there had been a blackout due to lightning. We scrambled to get to the proper platform, but it was difficult because all the escalators were nonfunctional and we had to drag the luggage we were bringing up all the steps. Then we got to the platform only to hear an announcement that the express train to the airport would not be leaving from Osaka Station due to the electrical problems. Instead, we had to take a different train to the opposite side of the city to pick the airport express up there. Once there, we found that the train was not stopping at its regular platform, but would randomly stop at one of four different platforms on the other side of the station. Sheesh.

Anyway, by the time we got through all that and finally arrived at the airport, we had just enough time to rearrange all the luggage before megory had to go. So, we didn't have a chance to eat one last meal at the airport as we had hoped, but at least our early departure made the blackout not as much of a catastrophe as it might have been.

After seeing her off, I wandered around in search of lunch. As I did so, I saw a great big poster with the word "Booby" plastered across it. Intrigued, since this did not seem the kind of thing one would normally see at an airport, I took a closer look. It turns out to be the name of an airplane cartoon character representing the airport. It's apparently intended to keep kids entertained.

...And entertained I'm sure they will be...particularly the ones who understand English...

Now that I have the place to myself again, I have to figure out how to spend the final week of my summer vacation. Today I curled up on the couch and read through the last Harry Potter book, which I had been putting off doing because I didn't really want it to be over.

Hmmm...now what...

I think that, overall, it did a good job tying up loose ends and bringing everything full circle. If I have one complaint, it's that the deaths at the very end (mainly Lupin and Tonks) didn't have any emotional impact, they were just...overkill. Some of the earlier deaths, such as Dobby, were quite dramatic and moving. It's just that, by the end, it's like..."yeah, yeah, killing off more people, whatever." It made me a bit miffed, because I thought it was poor treatment.
