I hear that my brother pacoese got a job in Chicago and is now apartment-hunting. Congratulations!

Sunday was nice and sunny, so I did laundry in the morning and went shopping during the warmest part of the afternoon. I went to the other branch of my local department store (Heiwadou) that's in Lala Port. As it turns out, THEY have the exact same lockable kerosene chest that my local branch wouldn't sell me, so I finally have one. The only difference is that I had to walk it halfway across town rather than a couple blocks.

You really appreciate your purchases when you have to carry them home on foot.

When I was about halfway home, a kid riding past on a bicycle called out "Gambatte!" (Good luck/do your best!) to me. A man I passed called out, "Wouldn't they deliver it?" The average Japanese person probably would have had it delivered.

Anyway, I finally got it back home. I was so tired that I completely forgot there was going to be the annual fire festival at my local shrine. I didn't go last year because...well, it's January, and it's cold at night. I had thought about going this year, but I guess it was not meant to be.

Whew! That's a long distance. It's true that there is a deeper appreciation for things we carry long distances. Congratulations on getting the chest.

I'm sorry about missing the fire festival. I'm glad you've been able to get some pictures of it before. (Is that the festival where they carry a long log?)
